Local Folder Directory Set Up

Before you attempt to download and intall SmartFTP, it's wise to first set up your Local directory. Your Local directory is where you store all your web site files on your computer. It's the folder where you will edit and make changes to your Mobile app development & website design pages. For example, in Windows, the default Local directory is My Documents. However, some Windows Operating systems use My Computer. Now then, in your My Documents folder, create the following folders/directories.

Remote Folder Directory Set Up

In your web hosting account, you have a file directory where all your files are stored. However, your top level file directory, that is, where all your delicate web hosting account files are stored, is inaccessable to the World Wide Web.

In most all cases, the files that display your web pages, images and graphics for the web, are located under your web hosting account in a directory usually named www or public_html.

Depending on your particular web hosting account, you will have to know where your public web hosting directory is located. To avoid confusion, you will want to match your Local directory /public_html with your remote directory, as these are the directories in which you will exchange information with, using your SmartFTP program.

Your (Web Hosting) Remote directory will be simular to the following directory/folder structure

Remote Directory:

/Home

/username

/www

/public_html
